Prepare for Your Retirement Counseling Appointment

How to Prepare for Your Retirement Counseling Appointment

Before you schedule a retirement counseling appointment, please attend one of our retirement seminars. The seminars will give you a broader understanding of your pension plan and prepare you to discuss the more complicated details of your retirement at your counseling appointment. All currently scheduled seminars can be found on the calendar located towards the bottom of the home page. Please contact the Call Center at (619) 525-3600 to register.

After you have attended a seminar and scheduled a counseling appointment, please bring the following documents with you to your appointment:

  • Proof of marriage (if you are married) - please provide a copy of your official marriage certificate
  • Proof of birth for whoever you plan to designate as a beneficiary (e.g., copy of their driver's license or birth certificate)
  • Recent paycheck from your plan sponsor
  • Direct deposit information (routing # and account #) for the bank you'd like your pension check deposited into (for service retirement and DROP exit only)
  • Decide how you'd like your taxes to be withheld from your pension check (for service retirement and DROP exit only)
  • If you are exiting DROP or service retiring before age 59 1/2, then bring your completed Certificate of Termination

Before your appointment, print out the checklist below that is most relevant to your upcoming retirement counseling appointment. While you review what will be covered at your appointment, you can get a head start thinking about questions you want to ask your counselor.
