SDCERS PUSHES FOR GREATER TRANSPARENCY THROUGH REAL TIME BOARD STREAMING

Date: Nov 10, 2014

The San Diego City Employees’ Retirement System (SDCERS) today announced its Board of Administration and Business and Governance Committee meetings will be streamed live on its website beginning this month. The move follows a similar decision made by only a handful of other public pension systems in California, making SDCERS a leader among the state’s pension systems when it comes to using technology to improve transparency and the level of participation by its membership.

SDCERS is one of the few among California Association of Public Retirement Systems to offer live online streaming. Other systems include the country’s second largest pension system, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), the country’s largest teachers’ retirement system, the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS), the Federated City Employees’ Retirement System of San Jose, the City of San Jose Fire and Police Retirement System and the San Diego County Employees’ Retirement Association (SDCERA).

“On behalf of SDCERS’ retired members and the Retired Employees’ Association, I am pleased this option is available. I have no doubt that retired and active members alike will utilize this feature to stay informed about the decisions made by their retirement system,” stated SDCERS Board member and retired City of San Diego employee Richard Wilken.

SDCERS will stream live, post and archive its Business and Governance Committee meetings online starting in November. Pre-recorded video of the Board of Administration meetings has been available on the system’s website, www.sdcers.org, since 2008. Members and the public can access the live streaming feed by visiting www.sdcers.org and clicking on the Live Streaming link available under the Board Meeting Information section on the homepage.

The decision to live stream and archive the Business and Governance Committee meetings received strong support from the Retired Employees’ Association (REA) and the Retired Fire and Police Association (RFPA). It was submitted for a vote by SDCERS’ Business and Governance Committee, followed by a vote of the full Board of Administration at its September 2014 meeting. The item received unanimous support.

SDCERS’ Board of Administration meets at 8:30 a.m. on the second Friday of odd-numbered months; committee meetings are held the Thursday before. The next meeting of the Board of Administration is Friday, November 14, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. The next Committee meetings are being held on Thursday, November 13, 2014 beginining at 9:00 a.m. Meetings are open to the public and held at 401 West A Street, San Diego 92101 on the 3rd floor. SDCERS administers defined benefit plans for the City of San Diego, the San Diego Unified Port District, and the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, and provides service retirement, disability retirement, death and survivor benefits to more than 20,000 members.
