Last week, the City Council unanimously approved the Mayor’s appointment of two new Board Members: Clifford Schireson and Paul Kaufmann. The City Council also approved the reappointment of veteran Board Member Carina Coleman.

Mr. Schireson comes to us with substantial experience in investment banking and management, as he was the Director and co-head of Fixed Income at Brandes Investment Partners. This will not be Mr. Schireson’s first seat on a Board, as he has served as Board Chair for the La Jolla Music Society, was on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation, and is currently on the San Diego Foundation’s Board of Governors.

Mr. Kaufmann is no stranger to SDCERS, as he has been on SDCERS’ Audit Committee since October 2017. He is also a Community Advisory Board Member at Sanford Burnham Prebys, a non-profit medical research institution that is dedicated to finding cures for human diseases. In his free time, Mr. Kaufmann works as an Adjunct Professor at Brandman University’s Business School in Irvine, CA.

Ms. Coleman recently finished up a partial term and we are honored she accepted the Mayor’s reappointment to serve a second full term. Ms. Coleman works with Sempra Energy as an accomplished investment management professional with experience managing both tax exempt and tax sensitive assets, including qualified and non-qualified retirement plan assets. SDCERS is lucky to have her expertise on our Investment Committee for four more years.

Appointed Board Members serve four-year terms with a two-term (eight year) limit, Elected Members serve four-year terms with no term limit, and the City Management Board Member serves for the period of employment in their position with the City of San Diego.

We are thrilled to welcome our new Board Members, and also to have Carina Coleman back for a second term! You can see all three at our next Board meeting on September 13th at 8:30 a.m. in our Board room. If you can’t attend in person, you can tune in to the live broadcast by clicking on “Board Meeting Agendas”, following the link to the online agendas, and clicking on “Live Media” in the Board of Administration line when the meeting starts.
