Note: SDCERS members hired by the City of San Diego after July 1, 2005, are not eligible to receive the "13th check" supplemental benefit, pending a current appeal.
Supplemental "13th Check" benefit
The supplemental "13th Check" benefit is paid from trust fund assets to eligible retirees in years when the qualification formula specified in the Municipal Code is satisfied. When qualified, SDCERS will calculate and pay the 13th Check to all eligible retirees annually in November. Generally, the amount of this benefit is $30 for each year of service credit with SDCERS (this does not include reciprocal time).*

To be eligible for the benefit, you must have at least 10 years of service credit and be on the retirement payroll for the month of October in the year in which the benefit is paid.

Survivors of eligible retirees will receive a proportionate share of this supplemental benefit.

*Those General Members who retired between January 8, 1982 and June 30, 1985, receive $45 per year of service credit; Effective Fiscal Year 1997, qualified retirees who retired on or before October 6, 1980 but after December 31, 1971 will receive $60 per year of service credit and qualified retirees retired on or before December 31, 1971 receive $75 per year of service credit.

Corbett Payment
The Corbett payment is the result of a settlement in a class action lawsuit. The Corbett payment is equal to 7% of the retiree's annual base retirement benefit, not including the supplemental 13th Check and supplemental COLA amounts. Any City of San Diego retiree who was on the June 30, 2000 retirement payroll is eligible for the Corbett payment.

The annual Corbett payment is paid to eligible retirees in any year when a 13th Check is paid. In the event payment is not made in a given year, the accrued amounts will be carried over for distribution in the next year that the 13th Check is paid.
