If you or your spouse qualify for a Social Security benefit in addition to your SDCERS retirement benefit, you should expect a reduced Social Security benefit. Because City employees do not pay into Social Security, this reduction is due primarily from an absence of contributions into Social Security during your city employment.
The reduction will not apply if you were eligible to receive a Social Security retirement or disability benefit prior to 1986, or if you met the minimum requirements to receive a SDCERS retirement benefit prior to 1986.
Contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213 to request your estimated Social Security benefit, or wait to receive your annual statement from Social Security, generally 1-2 months prior to your birthday.
