Upon a retired member's death, the member's designated beneficiary is entitled to receive a single payment of $2,000 in addition to any monthly continuance left to the beneficiary by the member.
A member may, however, choose to designate different beneficiaries to receive the benefit continuance and the $2,000 death benefit. Unlike beneficiaries who receive lifetime monthly continuances, the beneficiary designated to receive the $2,000 death benefit may be changed by the member at any time after retirement.
If you are not married at the time of your death and you have not listed a beneficiary, death benefit payments will be made, in the following order to: your children, parents, next of kin.
